Reacquiring the Lebanese Citizenship: Law Number 41
By virtue of the new Lebanese Citizenship Reacquisition Law Number 41, which was passed by the Lebanese Parliament on the 24th of November 2015, claiming your Lebanese nationality has never been easier, as long as the name of any of your male ancestors was registered in one of the following 3 censuses which include the names of emigrants who left Lebanon starting late 19th century:
- The 1921 census (of emigrants or residents),
- The 1924 census (of emigrants or residents), or
- The 1932 census (of emigrants).
If the name of any of your male ancestors was registered there, you will only need to prove your relation to them through any official documents in order to reacquire your Lebanese citizenship. The main (original) official documents are birth certificates (yours, your father's, your grandfather's... to prove the lineage). Providing a family tree helps a lot.
The process is free of charge and requires about 12 months to be finalized.
Applications will be considered by a committee within the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities of Lebanon. Applicants can appeal the decisions of the said committee within a month from the time they are legally notified of such decisions at the address they specified in their applications.
Note: Law # 41 could also apply to descendants of Lebanese who emigrated before 1921, but it excludes descendants of persons who adopted, expressly or implicitly, the citizenship of a country that seceded from the Ottoman Empire.
